Campus Power Blip
The Rice University Campus experienced a power blip.  Some network services will be impacted and will reset.  OIT/Networking and Technical Services will monitor and deploy resources for any lasting outages.  You may need to reboot your networked device as a result.  Thank you for your understanding.

At 5:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, the Office of Information Technology will be upgrading Proofpoint, which guards against the accidental loss of sensitive and confidential Rice data contained in outbound Ricemail messages.   IMPACT: We anticipate no impact on outbound Ricemail for Rice faculty, staff and graduate students. Rice undergraduate students are unaffected because their mail system is hosted externally, by Google.   Updates will be posted online: it.rice.edu.

On Saturday, June 6, the Mailman mailing list application will be unavailable between 5:00 AM and 9:00 AM due to an equipment upgrade.IMPACT: There will be no access to email lists managed through the mailman application during the maintenance.  Messages sent to mailman lists during the upgrade will queue up for delivery upon completion of the maintenance.Updates will be posted online: it.rice.edu.
At approximately 12:45, all of Rice's network connections to the Internet were dropped due to what appears to be an operating software failure on the border firewall system.  There is a potential that a hardware issue triggered this, but Rice's (and Juniper's) engineers have not yet determined the root cause.  We will continue to investigate, and we will post to IT-Alerts as necessary to keep everyone informed about this event.

The campus appears to have experienced a complete power disruption (a blip) that caused large portions of the campus network to go off-line.  According to our monitoring systems, it appears that all but a couple of devices recovered properly.  Networking will address those in by Monday morning.
The Rice Graduate Apartments on Bissonnet had a power blip which show caused the network equipment to reboot.  One closet (2nd floor) did not come back up cleanly.  OIT/Technical Services is enroute to investigate.
