As mentioned previously, at about 2:30pm, we experienced a hardware component failure that supports our primary campus data network.  The redundant system took over for the failure but the traffic load overwhelmed the redundant system.  To regain full network capacity, we had to restart primary and redundant systems.  As a result, we experience about a 30 minute (2:30pm-3:00pm) network outage.…
At approximately 2:28 pm today, one of the core network routers in Rice's primary data center failed when a hardware component went off-line.  The redundancy architecture worked partly, but the traffic load caused the redundant pair to become unresponsive.  Because of this failure, most of the systems in the data center became unavailable to campus and Internet clients.  The system has been partly restored, and no further disruptions are expected at this time.…
 4-26-2017: The Rice-IBC building telephone system (on Kirby Drive) is experiencing failures on the telephone system hard drive. Rice-IBC users have not been impacted yet. The defective hard drive will be replaced this evening, starting at 5:30pm. Work should be completed by 9:30pm. The Rice users at the Kirby location will not be able to use the Rice-IBC telephone system while this repair is being made.…
Several buildings are experiencing networking issues this morning.  The BRC is currently completely off-line for a period.  Mudd and FE&P, and some other smaller buildings may be affected as well.  Networking technicians are working on both issues right now.   Printing to plotters in Mudd may also be impacted.  We will post an update when services are restored.

New user provisioning software installed on Saturday (04/09/2016) is affecting some Active Directory users by turning on unwanted settings.  In order to prevent confusion we are going to restore user's settings to the state they were in Saturday morning before the new software was added.  User's having an issue with Active Directory not behaving as they normally expect, should just have to log out and log back in to return to the expected behavior.…

Campus Internet services were restored at 9:14 pm central time just after the earlier OIT-Alert was sent.  Further investigation and research by the Networking and Security teams has confirmed that services were disrupted stating at 8:59 pm, so the full disruption was 15 minutes. The root cause of the problem is still being investigated, but it has been confirmed to be related to the scheduled maintenance that was being performed on some Internet security systems this evening.
