Blog from July, 2009

The most recent spam attack identified by multiple Rice faculty, staff, and students appears to be from the IT Service Department and indicates your email account has been deactivated or limited.

The message requires you to respond with your username and password to reactivate your account. This is just another hoax, and congratulations to everyone for not falling for it!

IT does not close email accounts until the end of your relationship with the university, such as your graduation or the end of your Rice employment.

Remember, no one at Rice will ever ask for your password or other personal information by email.

The storage.rice.edu department directories (also known as your department's shared directory or shared drive) will be upgraded between 7:00 and 8:00 PM each evening, Monday, July 27 and Tuesday, July 28, 2009. A different group of department directories will be upgraded each night.

See the schedule to determine the evening for your department's directory upgrade: http://www.rice.edu/it/WeeklyMaintenance-2.html

The contents of the directories will be available in read-only format during your department's scheduled upgrade. Updates will be posted to the IT web site: http://www.rice.edu/it/

One of the redundant fiber path connections to the primary data center has been disrupted. This event is NOT causing any service disruptions because there is redundancy in the system. A repair will be scheduled as soon as the source of the problem has been identified.

One of the fiber between Mudd and PDC is currently down. NTDCO is working with the provider in restoring this connection. Connectivity betweem Mudd and PDC is still up through it's redundant connection. User's may have seen some brief latency when the network routing converged with the redundant connection.

We will provide an update as soon as it becomes available.

As many already know, Lovett Hall is going to be the site of some significant A/C repairs over the next few weeks. In order to ensure that we're able to sustain the current production data networking (wired and wireless) throughout this event, we need to remove the old, legacy data network from the basement. This work will start later today and will be complete by this evening.

The impact of this work should be invisible to the user community in Lovett, but there is a possibility that a system has not been migrated to the current, production network. We will identify these 1 or 2 locations and will take steps to get those back up as quickly as possible.
