Webmail issues

IT has received reports of inconsistent access to webmail (webmail.rice.edu) We are investigating and updates will be posted to the IT web page: http://it.rice.edu/

The PGP Server is now online. If you experience any issues, please contact the IT Help Desk: 713.348.HELP (4357) or helpdesk@rice.edu.

The PGP server is currently unavailable. This will only affect new installations of PGP; existing clients will operate normally. When the issue is resolved another IT Alert will be issued. Please contact Marc Scarborough for more information.

The web sites for Continuing Studies' catalog and Rice Media Services are online again. Report any further problems to helpdesk@rice.edu.

Rice Village Apartments

A network device serving the first and second floor of the RVA has failed. IT/Networking is aware, and Technical Services is en route with a replacement. An all clear message will be sent when the replacement is in place. - Danny Eaton (dannyeaton@rice.edu, x5233)

The email database is full for the Space Science Exchange server. IT is aware of the issue and is researching. Currently, if you use this email Exchange system, you cannot send or receive email. Updates will be posted to the IT web site: http://it.rice.edu/

A wired network connection refresh for Rice students has been scheduled for Thursday, August 11.

Each August, Rice undergraduate students must re-register to use the wired network. If you have not recently connected your computer to the Rice network, you will be prompted to agree to Rice's acceptable use policy and login with your NetID and password.

If you are using Windows, your operating system patches should be up-to-date and you need a current anti-virus application installed.

Reported power outage in Graduate Apartments affecting network services. Electricians are working on the issue.

The Cisco NAC Upgrade has been successfully completed. Please inform the IT Help Desk (x4357, help@rice.edu) of any problems.

The Cisco NAC upgrade scheduled for Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 5:00p has started. Another IT Alert will follow when work has completed.

Network services have been restored.

Network service in 5th floor Sewall Hall was not restored after a building wide power maintenance. Tech services is en route to investigate.

The storage system maintenance scheduled for 8/6/2011 at 00:00 has begin

Aug 5: A maintenance window for storage.rice.edu has been scheduled tonight at midnight for one hour.

All files, drives, web sites, and applications hosted on storage-related systems will be unavailable between midnight and 1:00 AM Saturday, August 6.

A maintenance window for storage.rice.edu has been scheduled to begin after work this Friday evening. The one-hour maintenance window runs from midnight until 1:00 AM Saturday morning, August 6.

During this window, a complete reboot (shut down and restart) is necessary to complete installation of a system upgrade.

The required system reboot means all files, drives, web sites, and applications hosted on storage-related systems will be unavailable between midnight and 1:00 AM.

Annual updates for OWL-Space were completed ahead of schedule this morning.

OWL-Space has returned to service and is fully functional.

Brief Internet Outage

A network outage occurred with the campus upstream Internet provider which caused intermittent connectivity to Rice resources from outside campus. At this time all services has been restored. The Internet provider is currently investigating the issue.

OWL-Space will be unavailable from 5AM until noon on Wednesday, August 3, while IT installs the upgrades for this academic year.

After the August 3 upgrade, OWL-Space can be accessed from mobile devices like cell phones and iPads. A number of other new features are also included in the upgrade, such as blogging, polls, and iCal integration. For more details, see: http://owlspace.rice.edu/newtools_280.html.
