The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will update CLEAR, the Curricular Linux Environment at Rice used by faculty and students in several departments, on the first day of Spring Break: Monday, March 2, 8:00-8:15 AM.  During the upgrade, CLEAR's applications like glibc, apache and R will be unavailable. Updates will be posted online: it.rice.edu.

 

Network management have recovered the switches in Anderson-Clarke Center which was affected by the power blip. Please report any other issues to the Helpdesk x4357.

During the two, very brief power outages this moring, most of the campus network remained on-line or restarted quickly.  The Anderson Clarke Center, however, has not come back on-line, so network technicians are working on restoring services as quickly as possible.  An update will be posted when services have been completely restored.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) will update a certificate used by Subversion and Turnin (a version control and repository system used in CS and other courses) 8:00-8:15 AM Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015. For a short time during the maintenance window, clients will not be able to access files in Subversion.  Updates will be posted online: it.rice.edu

IT Networking has completed the switch replacement.  Connectivity has been restored. Individual user devices may need to be rebooted. Please contact IT Operations (x4989) with connectivity issues.

IT Networking will be replacing the switches on the 3rd floor of Dell Butcher Hall beginning at 6pm.  The maintenance will take approximately 3 hours.  An update will be sent when the work has been completed.

Jabber Migration Complete

The Jabber service should be back up and operational.

This is due to power outage in the network closet. Housing and Dining/FEP is working to restore power.

A network switch in the Commons area of McMurtry College is offline.  FEP is onsite troubleshooting a power issue in that area of the building.  An update will be provided as soon as possible.

On Tuesday evening, February 24, at 6:00 PM, two network switch in Brockman Hall for Physics will be upgraded. The network connectivity for 2nd and 3rd floor of the building will be affected during the change over, but services will be returned to full functionality by 9pm. IT Networking completed the switch replacement at approximately 9:30pm.  Connectivity has been restored and verified.  Please contact IT Operations (x4989) with connectivity issues.

The software that runs Confluence and JIRA has been moved to new servers and appears to be up and running normally.

The following services should be operational:

  • IT-Alerts, including RSS feeds to IT web sites
  • Do-IT-Yourself documentation (docs.rice.edu),
  • wiki.rice.edu (personal or course wiki pages)
  • JIRA (issues.rice.edu, a bug/issue tracking application)

Confluence, the platform supporting Rice wikis, docs.rice.edu, and JIRA - a bug and version tracking application, will be offline at 8:00 PM tonight, February 18, for infrastructure maintenance. During the maintenance window, the following services and/or applications will be offline:

  • IT-Alerts, including RSS feeds to IT web sites

  • wiki.rice.edu (personal or course wiki pages)

IT Services Verified

All services that were affected by problem at 6:00 AM this morning have been resolved and verified.

IT was alerted regarding the intermittent failure of a number of services including email, DNS and authentication this morning at 6:00 AM.  The problem was diagnosed and we are currently verifying services.  Should you experience any problems, please email help@rice.edu.

 

 

IBC network connectivity has been restored.  Please contact Help Desk (x4357) if you are still experiencing network connectivity issues.

Users in IBC have reported a connectivity outage.  IT Networking is in route to investigate.  An update will be provided as soon as possible.

On Wednesday evening, February 18, at 6:00 PM, the last set of network switches in Herman Brown Hall will be upgraded. The network connectivity for 3rd and 4th floor of the building will be affected during the change over, but services will be returned to full functionality before classes begin the next morning. On Tuesday evening, February 17, at 6:00 PM, the network switch in Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen will be upgraded. The network connectivity for the building will be affected during the change over, but services will be returned to full functionality by 8pm. Updates will be posted online: http://it.rice.edu

IT Networking has completed maintenance on the Internet routing.  Please contact the IT Help Desk (x4357) if you experience Internet connectivity issues.

IT Networking is performing maintenance on Internet networking equipment.  Users may experience intermittent connectivity during this time. An update will be sent at completion.

One of the network components in Mudd Lab will be upgraded to meet RiceNet3 requirements beginning at 6:00 PM on Tuesday night, February 10, 2015.  The necessary outage to complete this work will impact equipment in half of Mudd Lab, including all printers and plotters in the Mudd Operations Center:

  • plotters
  • resume printer
  • thesis printer
  • md-color printer

The computers in the student lab, Mudd 101, are not affected.  Do not send jobs to the plotters, resume, thesis, or Mudd Color printers between 6:00 and 9:00 PM.  No jobs will be received by or printed on these devices while the network switch is offline.

Ensemble, the media services and hosting system supporting OWL-Space videos and webcast archives, will be unavailable early Wednesday morning, February 11, between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. During this regularly scheduled OWL-Space - Sakai maintenance window, IT will upgrade Ensemble's media server.  Status updates will be posted to the IT web site: it.rice.edu

One of the network components in Mudd Lab will be upgraded to meet RiceNet3 requirements beginning at 6:00 PM on Tuesday night, February 10, 2015.  The necessary outage to complete this work will impact equipment in half of Mudd Lab, including all printers and plotters in the Mudd Operations Center:

  • plotters
  • resume printer
  • thesis printer
  • md-color printer

The computers in the student lab, Mudd 101, are not affected but don't try to print to Mudd Plotters or Printers on Tuesday night from 6PM to 9PM.


The plotters (poster-size printers) in Mudd Lab will not print jobs between 6 and 9 PM on Tuesday, February 10. 

Nothing sent to the Mudd plotters between 6PM and 9PM will print.  The plotters will still appear to be available while the network connection is off.  Jobs can be submitted but no output will result and no error message will be sent to indicate the job did not print.  There will be no charges for jobs sent between 6 and 9 PM because no jobs will actually print during those hours.
