Due to inclement weather conditions, various buildings are experiencing power interruptions affecting network services. Network Managent is currently monitoring.

The scheduled work for Rice's Internet connectivity (routers and firewalls) was completed by 8:00 am this morning, as planned.  All internet services have been restored.  Rice's Network Management will continue to monitor the system health throughout the rest of the weekend, but if you notice anything not working as expected with connectivity to and from the Internet, please contact us via a ticket to helpdesk@rice.edu.  If you have an urgent problem between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm on Saturday or Sunday, please contact our Data Center Operations team at 713-348-4989.

We have resolved the issues related to mailman.rice.edu. Service has been restored. If you experience any mailman related issues, please contact the IT Help Desk: 713.348.HELP (4357) or helpdesk@rice.edu.

On Saturday morning, May 30, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will replace the networking equipment that connects the university’s internal network to the Internet.  This equipment includes the routers and firewalls that move data in and out of campus as well as  help protect the university's internal network against malicious attacks.

While the equipment is being upgraded between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM, data flowing between the Internet and Rice may experience intermittent connection issues.

Should you notice Internet connection issues after the maintenance concludes at 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 30, please report them by emailing the Help Desk: helpdesk@rice.edu.

Saturday, May 30, 2015: The migration to the CampusPress by EduBlogs environment is underway.  Web site content was frozen in read-only mode Thursday at 5:00 PM and the migration began Friday, May 29.

The migration will continue through the weekend.  Expect the next status update on Monday, June 1.

The new environment is a cloud solution with a robust WordPress platform including many popular themes, plug-ins, widgets and other features.  Details on the new features can be found inhttp://about.blogs.rice.edu.

What you can expect during the migration:

  • Content is still visible to your readers
  • Content is frozen in read-only mode (can't be edited during migration)
  • For emergency content updates, contact the Help Desk: helpdesk@rice.edu or 713.348.4357.
  • The new platform will retain the previous domain names (ex: about.blogs.rice.edu is still correct after the migration)
  • The old Rice blogs platform will be renamed oldblogs.rice.edu and content archived “as is" (ex: about.oldblogs.rice.edu is the archive copy)

The network switches in McMurtry College will be upgraded to the new hardware this week. During this exercise users will experience an intermittent network outage for both wired and wireless.  Thank you in advance for your patience during this exercise.  -  OIT/Network Management and Technical Services.

The network devices in Duncan Hall 4008 will be replaced tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday, 19 May) at 6 PM.  Users may need to reboot their devices to restore network connectivity.  Technical Services and Network Management will be on hand for any issues, however users are advised to contact either the OIT:Service Help Desk (xHELP, x4357) or their divisional representatives for assistance.  

On Monday morning, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) noticed a problem with Rice web site "People Search" results. The problem has been resolved.   Please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@rice.edu) if you notice further issues with Rice web site search results.

The campus appears to have experienced a complete power disruption (a blip) that caused large portions of the campus network to go off-line.  According to our monitoring systems, it appears that all but a couple of devices recovered properly.  Networking will address those in by Monday morning.

Campus wide power issues

The Rice University campus is experiencing power issues at this time.  FE&P and OIT/Network Management are aware.  Network equipment may go down multiple times.  An update will be sent when available.   

The Rice Graduate Apartments on Bissonnet had a power blip which show caused the network equipment to reboot.  One closet (2nd floor) did not come back up cleanly.  OIT/Technical Services is enroute to investigate.  

Shibboleth issues have been resolved.

OIT is currently investigating issues with our Shibboleth authentication service.  Updates will be posted.

The planned software upgrade to the centralized wireless controllers for the campus is complete.  If you experience issues connecting to the wireless networks, please contact the OIT:Service Help Desk (x4357, xHELP), or your divisional representatives.  Thank you - OIT:Network Management.

One of the redundant internet service provider circuits has a network blip lasting approximately 5 minutes, from 12:14 PM to 12:19 PM today.  OIT/Network Management is working with this vendor for a reason for outage (RFO) at this time.  Thank you for your patience.

Vm Server Migration

SEG is in the process of migrating virtual servers off vmstorage 3 and 4.

EduBlogs Migration May 28-31

The university's general purpose blogging and content management system, blogs.rice.edu, is moving to a more robust WordPress platform with many popular themes, plug-ins, widgets and other features.  Rice University has contracted with CampusPress by EduBlogs to provide the new cloud-hosted environment.  Details on the new features can be found in http://about.blogs.rice.edu.

Over the weekend of May 28-31 the full contents of blogs.rice.edu will be moved into the new CampusPress environment.

  • The new platform will retain the previous domain names at blogs.rice.edu.
  • The old Rice blogs platform will be renamed oldblogs.rice.edu and content archived “as is.”
