At 5:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, the Office of Information Technology will be upgrading Proofpoint, which guards against the accidental loss of sensitive and confidential Rice data contained in outbound Ricemail messages.

IMPACT: We anticipate no impact on outbound Ricemail for Rice faculty, staff and graduate students. Rice undergraduate students are unaffected because their mail system is hosted externally, by Google.

Updates will be posted online: it.rice.edu.

At approximately 12:45, all of Rice's network connections to the Internet were dropped due to what appears to be an operating software failure on the border firewall system.  There is a potential that a hardware issue triggered this, but Rice's (and Juniper's) engineers have not yet determined the root cause.  We will continue to investigate, and we will post to IT-Alerts as necessary to keep everyone informed about this event.
