The network maintenance has complete at this time.  As expected there was no detectable impact to the user community.  

At 6 PM tonight, Rice OIT Network management will be doing some network maintenance that should have no discernible user impact.  We do not anticipate any disruption of Internet services but there is a potential that some of the maintenance activities may trigger some brief outages during the maintenance period.  OIT Network Management personnel will be on campus during this change.  An update will be sent upon completion.  In the event you need urgent assistance, please contact the Operations at 713-348-4989.    

IT Networking will be performing maintenance on the network switches in the Mudd building from 6am until 7am.  During this time, users may experience intermittent connectivity. Notification will be sent when the work has been completed.

IBC Building power blip

The network equipment in the IBC building experienced a power blip.  Users may need to reboot their computers to reestablish network connectivity for wired access.  Thank you.

The planned maintenance exercise for this morning is complete.  Thank you.

The planned network maintenance for Herring Hall will begin at 0630.  Users will have a brief network interruption as each access switch is cut over to the new router one at a time.  No reboot should be required.  An update will be sent upon completion.

At around 3:00pm today (10/26/15) , one of the redundant systems that provides services for connecting to the network, logging into servers, and accessing systems with friendly names (i.e. www.rice.edu, www.google.com, etc.) crashed late today.  Even though it is redundant, the nature of the failure caused the services to perform in an inconsistent manner resulting in the inability to access some systems or access our network altogether.  As of 4:20pm, we restored the redundant system to working status so all services should now be fully available.

The Office of Information Technology / Technical Services would like to perform network access switch upgrades for the B150/B153 network closet on Wednesday, 14 October at 6:00 PM.  Due to the work involved, this would be done in the evening.  Users will experience intermittent connectivity (both wired and wireless) during this exercise, and WILL need to reboot ALL devices upon completion to ensure connectivity.  Thank you for your understanding.

The power has been restored to the network switch at the Media Center.  Users will  need to reboot their devices to restore full connectivity.  Thank you.

OIT/Network Management and Technical Services are aware of a network outage impacting both wired and wireless in the Media Center.  We are investigating and will provide an update when possible.  Thank you.

The Radius service upgrade is complete. Please log a service ticket by visiting http://helpdesk.rice.edu or call the Help Desk at x4357 with any issues.

A scheduled upgrade of the campus Radius service is beginning.  These servers provide authentication for wireless and VPN users. No service interruption is anticipated.

IT Networking has completed maintenance on the Internet firewall. Please report any Internet connectivity issues to the Help Desk (x4357).

IT Networking will be performing maintenance on the Internet firewall.  Users may experience intermittent Internet connectivity between 3am and 5am.  Notification will be sent when the work is complete.

At 4:30 pm, Google gave the all-clear with the Google Apps Suite.  Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google Docs and Google Slides should all be operational now.

At approximately 2:00 pm today, Google began experiencing sporadic outages on certain portions of the Google App suite... specifically, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google Docs and Google Slides.  Google is currently investigating the issue and will give an update to their status at 4:00 pm today. Once we hear that Google's services have stabilized, we will send an all clear.

This Saturday morning, October 10, from 3:00 am to 5:00 am, Rice's networking team will be performing maintenance on the equipment that supports Rice’s connection to the Internet.  We do not anticipate any disruption of Internet services but there is a potential that some of the maintenance activities may trigger some brief outages during the maintenance period.

If there is a disruption, it should be limited only to communications to and from the Internet and it will be brief (10-15 minutes).

We will be sending out notices to IT-Alerts prior to the start of the maintenance and after the work is completed.
