OIT Networking and Data Center personnel are on site and will begin the planned maintenance for the VSS (virtual switching system) in Pod A at 0600 this morning.  No impact is expected to be seen by our customers.  An update will be sent upon completion of this exercise.  Thank you.

OIT Networking has completed maintenance on the Internet security devices.  Internet connectivity has been restored.  Please contact the Help Desk (x4357) with any issues.

OIT Networking will be performing maintenance on the Internet security devices beginning at 3am. During this time, Internet connectivity may not be available.  Notification will be sent at the conclusion of the maintenance.

This Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 3:00 am - 6:00 am CST, the OIT Network Team will be performing scheduled maintenance (a software upgrade) on the network equipment that connects Rice campus to the internet.  During this time, there will be some temporary disruption to external internet connectivity.  
Prior to the work starting and upon completion, a note will be sent to the OIT-Alert mailing list.

On Sunday, May 15, beginning at 8:00 AM, IT will perform rolling reboots, part of maintenance on the following storage solutions:

  • Storage.rice.edu (individual storage and department shared storage)
  • Crate (file storage space for researchers)
  • RNAS (storage solution purchased by departments for archival storage, not research related)

These services will remain online for most of the rolling reboot, with only intermittent connection interruptions.  Updates will be posted to the IT web site: it.rice.edu.

Be aware of the phishing email with the Subject: URGENT: Validate your account from Technical Support

Do not respond or take action on this phishing message other than deleting the message.  Phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire private information, such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Rice OIT will never ask for your User ID or password via email. 

If you suspect that you have received one of these messages and need assistance in disposing of the message or if you accidentally responded to the phishing message, contact the Help Desk: helpdesk@rice.edu or 713.348.4357.

Deprecated services were restored to full functionality early this morning.

This Saturday morning (5/7), at 2:30 am, users of the Rice campus telephone system will experience deprecated service, affecting ten digit dialing to/from campus. These services will be restored to full capabilities by 4:30am. All internal campus dialing will be unaffected.

Rice critical services (RUPD, EHS, Student Counseling, BRC front desk, South/Central Plant and OIT Operations) will have alternative routing in place during this time, allowing receipt of inbound ten digit calls to these departments. Cell phones will be used for outbound ten digit calls. Again, all campus four digit dialing is unaffected.

Thursday May 5th at 6 AM – Sewall 557
