The Data Transfer Node (DTN) at Rice facilitates the movement of data into and out of the "work" shared filesystem available only DAVinCI, STIC, and Blue Biou. It provides massively parallel file transfers so facilitate moving large data sets efficiently. You will be able to move data between participating institutions available via globus. Additionally, if you install and configure the Globus Connect software you will be able to transfer files using your local computer as an Endpoint.

Prerequisite for Using This System

You must have a globus online account.

Using Globus to transfer files

You will utilize the Endpoint named: rice#dtn

Your path destination or source will be in the "work" shared filesystem available only on DAVinCI, STIC, and Blue Biou. You will need to pick a subdirectory of "work" with which you have access to receive or send data.

To utilize your netID credentials with globus please do the following:

  1. Go to and create a globus online account.
  2. Once the account is set up and you are logged in, click on your user id on the top right and then click on "manage identities"
  3. Select "Add External Identity" and for the account provider select "InCommon/CILogon"
  4. On the CILogon page choose "Rice University" as your identity provider
  5. On the Rice page enter your netid and password and you're done

To test it out, log out of globus online, then go to and select "alternate login" and choose "InCommon/CILogon" or go directly to Click proceed and on the Rice page enter your netID and password and you should be logged into globus online.
