Today's maintenance on Storage, Crate and RNAS is complete.

Please contact the Help Desk (x4357) if any issues need to be addressed.

Maintenance on the following storage solutions will begin at 8:00am.

  •  Storage.rice.edu (individual storage and department shared storage)
  • Crate (file storage space for researchers)
  •  RNAS (storage solution purchased by departments for archival storage, not research related

OIT will perform rolling reboots.  These services will remain online for most of the maintenance period, with only intermittent connection interruptions.

Will be performing needed windows system updates to the central print systems. These updates will require restarting the print systems which will prevent access to print services for a brief period of time (for about 15 minutes).  Any incoming print jobs will be queued up and delivered once the print servers come back online.

This update will affect:

owlprinting.rice.edu

printing.rice.edu

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

Mike Pettway

Monitoring: SSH Login to CLEAR

The secure shell (SSH) login service for CLEAR has been restored.  The engineers working on it will continue to monitor the issue over the weekend to ensure that it does not fail again.

Mail Service Problems Reported

One of the IT Mail Servers (Cyrus 2) is experiencing problems.  IT is investigating the issue.

This is a test message to illustrate a point for the Town Hall meeting February 19, 2009.

Posted at:  2:16 p.m.  Baker Hall  had a powere "outage" just before 2:00 PM today.   One of the switches (on the first floor) is being stubborn.   Ford some reason, it does not wanting to return to it's normal functionality in a timely manner.   However the incredibly Technical Services and Networking/Telecommunications/Operations personnel are working on it and I sure they will have it working perfectly again in no time flat.      UPDATE: 4:00 p.m. Isn't it wonderful!?   Baker Hall is back up and functional at this time.   Through careful and meticulous research, the Technical Services and Networking/Telecommunications/Operations members found two switchers did not booted properly, and had to be coaxed gently to full operations.  Hermannn Brown also experienced a simultaneious power outage, but everything came back up over they're without incident.  From the FE&P reports, it appears that we lost one phase of the power from Centerpoint for about a very short amount of time, resulting in these issues.  Thank you for your patienc.   Please contact me personnally if you have any questions regards this outage.  Carlyn Chatfield, 713.348.4819, carlyn@rice.edu and have a nice day! (big grin)

IT will be updating the software for DNS lookups* on Friday morning between 7:00 and 7:15 AM. There will be no service outage during this update.

*Translation: A DNS lookup refers to the process of matching the digital, Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer or server (example: 128.42.5.144) to its host name (help.rice.edu). Most people type in the host name because it is easier to remember, then their local server translates the host name to the digital IP address, which can the be served up on the customer's web browser.

Rice faculty and staff with Windows PCs, please run TrendMicro OfficeScan as soon as possible (Friday afternoon or Monday morning) to protect your PC from a new virus that is circulating through the Internet and has already been detected on the Rice campus.  Instructions on running OfficeScan on your Rice Windows PC can be found at: https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/x/GYfp
